The 4 C's of Diamonds

Every diamond is graded across four characteristics — cut, color, clarity, and carat. Together they define how a stone sparkles, how rare it is, and where your budget is best spent. Here's how to weigh each one.

The First C

Cut

Cut is the C that makes a diamond come alive. It describes how precisely a stone's facets are shaped and angled to return light to your eye. A well-cut diamond dazzles with brilliance and fire, while a poor cut can leave even a flawless stone looking dull. If you prioritize one of the four C's, make it this one.

The Second C

Color

Color measures how close a white diamond comes to being truly colorless, graded from D (icy white) down through the alphabet as subtle warmth appears. Most differences are invisible to the unaided eye, so a near-colorless stone often delivers the same bright look for considerably less. The right setting metal can flatter your chosen grade beautifully.

The Third C

Clarity

Clarity reflects the tiny natural inclusions formed as a diamond crystallized deep within the earth. Graded from Flawless to Included, most of these marks are only visible under magnification. A diamond that is "eye-clean" — free of inclusions visible without a loupe — looks just as pure as a higher grade while leaving more room in your budget for cut and carat.

The Fourth C

Carat

Carat is a measure of a diamond's weight, not its size — though the two are related. Because larger stones are rarer, price rises sharply at popular weights like one and two carats. Choosing a carat just below a round milestone, or favoring an elongated shape that appears larger, lets you maximize presence without overspending.

Diamond Questions, Answered

Which C matters most?

For most people, cut has the greatest impact on how a diamond looks. A precise cut creates the brilliance and sparkle we associate with a beautiful stone, even at a modest color or clarity grade. We generally suggest prioritizing cut first, then balancing color, clarity, and carat to your taste and budget.

What's the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds?

Lab-grown and natural diamonds are chemically and optically identical — both are pure crystallized carbon graded on the same four C's. The difference is origin: natural diamonds formed over billions of years in the earth, while lab-grown diamonds are created in a matter of weeks in a controlled setting. Lab-grown stones typically cost less per carat, while natural diamonds are prized for their rarity. Both are a wonderful choice at SRX.

What is a diamond certificate?

A certificate is an independent grading report from a respected gemological laboratory that documents a diamond's exact cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, along with its measurements and proportions. Think of it as the stone's passport — it confirms you're getting precisely the quality you paid for. Every certified diamond at SRX arrives with its full report.

How do I get the best value for my budget?

Spend where the eye notices and save where it doesn't. Choose an excellent cut for maximum sparkle, then select a near-colorless grade and an eye-clean clarity rather than paying for perfection that's invisible without magnification. Selecting a carat weight just shy of a round milestone, or an elongated shape, can also make a stone look larger for less.
